Office space is becoming more flexible, more open and greener.  What does this mean for you?

These days, I have frequent discussions with my clients about the possible green options and the benefits.  As with all business decisions, the impact on the bottom line has to be considered.  Fortunately, advances in technology are developing green solutions for everything in the office environment that are no more costly than traditional materials.

In fact, some “greener” options actually save both money and energy.  For example, replacing a desktop computer with a laptop increases workplace space flexibility and lowers energy consumption by as much as 50%. Even green elements that cost more may pass the test because they have lower energy consumption.

More environmentally friendly and sustainable interior office solutions incorporate products that are designed and manufactured to emit fewer harmful fumes into the office environment.  Some of these newly developed products that make an office interior both more appealing and greener include solid surfaces made from soybeans and fabric panels made from recycled plastic. 

For companies who are truly committed to a green future, there are many organizations that provide information and ratings for products that meet environmental and sustainability guidelines. The most well know is the Energy Star program (highlighted in my July report). There is also EPEAT, a website that rates electronic equipment (including computers and cell phones).  Greenstar Hub is a marketplace and platform for businesses to source products that reduce negative impact on the environment.

Here are a few options that you might consider for a greener, more worker friendly workspace:

  • Open floor plans tend to make the space less hierarchical and lead to better relationships
  • Using dividers rather than walls allows the passage of light and air and make environments more pleasant
  • Less overhead lighting and more task lighting gives employees a sense of control over their space

All of these factors can combine to create a workplace that is healthier for the environment and for the people that utilize the space as well.  In addition, a workplace that is healthier for the environment can have a positive impact on morale.  Recent studies have found that sustainable interiors actually increase employee productivity and retention.
