One of the biggest barriers to people signing up for change is difficulty in visualizing what the change is and how it might affect them personally.   Seeing it and hearing about it from people they trust provides a sense of assurance, which allows them to sign on to the concept.  This is true in the world of real estate.

“Intelligent Working” includes a number of effective real estate strategies that improve efficiency such as hoteling, hot desking, space sharing, community space, team space, and touchdown space.   While these methods are overall simple concepts, it is still quite challenging to communicate their impact through word documents and even power point presentations.  This has especially been the case in the professional and financial services industries, which have a number of small or medium size offices across a large geographic network.

The use of short video clips is a key tool that helps people to understand “Intelligent Working” and become more comfortable with how it is used.  For example, a company with multiple offices can pilot hoteling or team space, video how it actually works, and then share the videos with other offices.  Seeing these methods allows the viewer the same feeling as a “walkthrough”.   The video might focus on a certain practice such as hoteling and illustrate the day in the life of an agile worker who travels but has the comforts of his or her own office even when on the road.  Interviews with leaders and team members may be recorded sharing their experiences and perceptions of “Intelligent Working” both before and after the change to that way of working.

Management often finds that using small video clips is very effective.  A four-minute video can convey a lot of facts and rational data but also the emotional piece in a very short time.  The video can clarify how a concept looks and feels in a way that documents and presentations might miss and lead to confusion.  Moreover, hearing people they know talking about their experiences in their own words provided comfort and confidence that the change would not be as difficult as some colleagues had pre-conceived.

For companies with one or just a few offices, a video can be accomplished with a peer company which has implemented the change and be almost as effective.
