Fortunately, advances in technology have impacted office furniture as well. Consider the expense of ergonomically designed furnishings an investment that pays back in these three ways:
1) Increased productivity – this one if fairly intuitive. If your worker is constantly off task because of trying to make an uncomfortable work station more comfortable, they won’t be very productive!
2) Reduced turnover results when injuries are reduced, along with worker pain, injury and frustration with working conditions.
3) Higher morale results when workers are productive and pain free.
Given that desks, chairs and workstations that incorporate good ergonomic design will positively impact the bottom line, here are some important points to keep in mind.
The design and fit of a workers chair is the most important piece in the puzzle of increasing productivity through ergonomics. Chair height must be adjustable so that its occupant can position themselves at the proper height.
While chair comfort is essential, prolonged sitting is not recommended. Sit-stand desks are an ideal solution. These desks easily adjust to allow the user to stand and work periodically. If the budget doesn’t permit the investment, periods of movement should be incorporated into the day. Stand-up meetings, job design and periodic breaks can be used to alleviate the physical strain associated with sitting at a desk for hours at a stretch.
Modern desks and workstations incorporate many elements that can be adjusted to enhance productivity. The key here is to make sure that they are adjusted correctly. Ideally, the occupant of the desk will be trained in how to make needed adjustments themselves, instead of asking for assistance.
Paying attention to the physical comfort of workers, and making sure that their work environment supports their physical and mental wellbeing can increase productivity, reduce turnover and improve morale. Sound like a win!
